This paper estimated the daily intake of essential and nonessential elements from lamb muscle longissimus thoracis et lumborum (m. LTL) available to the population in Missouri. Missouri grain-finished (n = 36), Missouri grass-finished (n = 40) and imported New Zealand grass-finished (n = 40) lamb m. LTL were purchased and assayed for their element composition. Total mercury in samples was quantified by atomic absorption spectrometry and other elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Analysis of certified reference materials (DORM-2 and TORT-2) gave recovery rates ranging from 86 to 108% and 85 to 104%, respectively. The abundance of essential elements in Missouri grain-finished and Missouri grass-finished lamb m. LTL followed the order: Potassium > phosphorus > sodium > magnesium > calcium > zinc > iron. The order in the imported New Zealand grass-finished group was: Potassium > phosphorus > sodium > calcium > magnesium > zinc > iron. Since many variables lacked normality, non-parametric (Kruskal–Wallis) comparison test was performed and the results suggested no significant difference (P > 0.05) in element composition among the lamb m. LTL groups. The estimated daily intake of 14 elements from consumption of 100 g lamb m. LTL posed no hazard to consumers.  相似文献

Exposure to mercury (Hg) in Seychelles is expected to be high owing to the large amounts of fish regularly consumed. In spite of this consumption, a recent long-term study of child development found no evidence that higher prenatal exposure to Hg increases the risk of neurological disorders. To identify the major sources of mercury in the diets of Seychellois fish consumers, 16 species of fish common to local markets were tested for total Hg. Selenium (Se), which may act as an antidote to Hg toxicity, was also measured. Mercury and selenium were measured using standardised laboratory procedures. The average total Hg concentration across all species was 0.07 mg/kg while the Se concentrations averaged 0.29 mg/kg. Based on the pooled species dataset, there was no correlation between total Hg and Se concentrations, suggesting that joint bioaccumulation of these elements does not occur in the reef fishes tested. Barracuda (Sphyraena jello) had the highest concentration of Hg (0.36 mg/kg), a level that was below European Union guidelines. Although Seychellois traditionally eat a large amount of fish, barracuda would need to be consumed more than 5 times a week for FAO/WHO Total Hg Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) limits to be exceeded, an unusual rate of consumption. Further investigations are needed to assess the risks posed to the population through the consumption of marine fish and fish products.  相似文献

Large numbers of individuals suffered severe neurological effects from poisoning with methyl mercury from the consumption of fish contaminated by industrial discharge in Minamata in the 1950s and 1960s and from bread made from fungicide-treated wheat in the early 1970s in Iraq. In both episodes, infants exposed in utero showed developmental delays. Data from Iraq permitted the estimation of dose-response relationships and provided evidence of greater sensitivity of the foetal brain compared to adult. Studies in a number of communities regularly consuming fish have sought to determine whether and at what level of prenatal exposure neurodevelopment defects may be detected, but the findings do not present a consistent picture. Benchmark analysis using data from Iraq and the three largest studies (New Zealand, Faroes, and Seychelles) suggest an overlap in estimated dose corresponding to a 10% increase in prevalence of adverse effects above background level. However, the Seychelles study, examining children up to 9 years of age, has not found a consistent pattern of adverse developmental effects; a possible explanation may be the presence of micronutrients in the ocean fish diet that enhance brain development and/or counter the toxic effects of methyl mercury.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies to determine the impact of low level toxic exposure on child development are important in guiding clinical and public health action. However, carrying out such studies and interpreting their findings presents a number of significant challenges to the investigators. First, they must find a cohort with suitable exposure, select a biomarker that will accurately determine the level of exposure and determine the endpoints that are most likely to detect subtle differences in neurodevelopment. Following that, the logistics of the study must be organised and collaboration established with the local population and health authorities. To accurately interpret the data, they must also accurately determine covariates that impact child development. After the data are collected, interpreting the findings presents a further challenge. Throughout this process, the study must adhere to fundamental epidemiological principles and clearly defined statistical approaches. This paper discusses those principles and uses the Seychelles Child Development Study to show how one epidemiological study addressed them.  相似文献

Methyl mercury (MeHg) is neurotoxic and all fish contain at least trace amounts. Consequently, prenatal or fetal exposure occurs when pregnant women consume fish and children are exposed postnatally when they breastfeed or consume fish. However, the level of exposure at which toxicity occurs is presently unknown. Since behavioural endpoints can be sensitive indicators of toxic exposure, we administered the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) to measure behaviour as part of a prospective, longitudinal, double blind study (n = 779) of prenatal MeHg exposure, the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS). The CBCL Total T score was a primary endpoint at 66 and 107 month evaluations of the cohort and showed no association with prenatal or postnatal MeHg exposure. This paper reports the results of a secondary analysis of the CBCL subscales to see if specific aspects of behaviour might show associations. The SCDS main cohort was enrolled in 1989-90 and evaluated on five occasions through 107 months of age. The child's primary caregiver completed the CBCL at the 107 month evaluation. Prenatal exposure was determined by measuring total mercury (THg) in maternal hair growing during pregnancy and recent postnatal exposure by analysing the child's hair taken at the 107 month evaluation. Analysis included linear and nonlinear multiple regression models. For prenatal MeHg exposure, the Social Problems subscale was significantly associated and the Somatic Complaints subscale was marginally associated. Both were beneficial associations. For postnatal exposure the Thought Problems subscale was associated in an adverse direction. This secondary analysis identified a small number of subtle beneficial and adverse associations with prenatal and postnatal MeHg exposure for specific CBCL subscales. These analyses provide no evidence for an adverse effect of prenatal exposure. The adverse postnatal association is difficult to interpret because we measured only recent (about one month) exposure and no adjustment was made for the multiplicity of endpoints.  相似文献

Methyl mercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxicant that with sufficient exposure can seriously impair the central nervous system and cause mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and neuromotor dysfunction. The level of exposure needed to adversely affect the nervous system is unknown. Human exposure to low levels of MeHg is common from consumption of fish. We examined the relationship between MeHg exposure and development of articulatory-phonologic speech skills in children whose mothers consumed a diet high in fish during pregnancy to determine whether any adverse associations could be detected. A total of 544 children from the Republic of Seychelles were given a speech assessment when they were 66 months of age. Exposure level was determined by measuring MeHg in maternal hair growing during pregnancy. No adverse associations between articulatory- phonologic speech skills and prenatal MeHg exposure were detected. The findings of this investigation are compatible with previous developmental assessments of Seychellois children that have indicated no adverse effects of prenatal MeHg exposure from fish consumption.  相似文献

Methyl mercury (MeHg) poisoning or Minamata disease (MD) from fish consumption is a public health concern throughout the world because all fish contain small amounts. The lowest exposure level needed to impair children's development is controversial. Actual poisoning with MeHg from fish consumption has been reliably reported only two times. It occurred in Minamata, Japan in the 1950s and then in Niigata, Japan in the 1960s. On each occasion, massive industrial pollution led to local fish having mercury levels as high as 40 ppm. In Niigata the pollution was on the Agano River and there were over 2000 commercial fishermen active at that time. We studied adult subjects who had been exposed perinatally to MeHg from fish consumption during the Niigata poisoning to determine the long-term impact of exposure. We identified mothers with elevated levels of exposure during the epidemic and those diagnosed with MeHg poisoning. The subjects of the study were their adult children, born during the epidemic. The evaluation consisted of a questionnaire (administered by interview) focusing on development, symptoms, and current function and a standard medical and neurological examination. The subjects were divided into four groups based upon prenatal levels of mercury in maternal hair or the presence of MD. For Group A the hair mercury levels were 50 ppm or more, for Group B the mercury levels were 25-49 ppm, and for Group C 10-24 ppm. The subjects in Group D were born to mothers diagnosed with MD, but their mercury levels were not measured. Exposure was predominantly prenatal, but some mothers also breast fed their infants. Group A included 13 subjects among whom two were diagnosed with congenital MeHg poisoning and in two others it was suspected. Group B included 10 subjects, of whom three had symptoms compatible with MeHg poisoning. Group C had nine subjects including one with intellectual deficit and another with hearing loss. Group D had eight subjects of whom four had symptoms compatible with MeHg exposure, but only one had abnormal neurological findings. Among the subjects thought to have congenital or childhood MeHg poisoning, intelligence did not appear to have declined over time. More children were affected by prenatal and postnatal MeHg exposure at Niigata than was previously reported.  相似文献

目的:探讨汞离子在人体内的吸收与排泄过程。方法:将慢性皮肤溃疡患者48例随机分为2组,试验组外用朱红膏,对照组使用不含汞的龙珠软膏,于用药前及用药后2周、4周、6周,停药后2周、6周测其血汞及尿汞浓度。结果:血汞、尿汞浓度有随时间变化的趋势;时间因素的作用因分组的不同而不同;药物因素能升高患者血尿汞浓度,停药后浓度明显下降。结论:朱红膏外用于溃疡面积小于60 cm~2慢性皮肤溃疡患者6周,血尿汞随用药时间的延长有不同类型的波动形式,但其值仍在安全范围之内。  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the interface stomatitis patterns of oral lichenoid lesions in contact with amalgam and to compare these with the histologic changes in oral lesions clinically associated with porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations. To relate these features to the presence of tissue-bound mercury (Hg).
DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of tissue biopsies, with clinical data collected via a complementary questionnaire.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 479 biopsies diagnosed in 1987 as 'lichenoid reactions'. From these, we retrieved all with amalgam contact and without candida or medication. From 1990–91, all mucosal lesions stated to be associated with PFM restorations were then retrieved for comparative analysis. The biopsies were examined with routine histologic and autometallographic methods. RESULTS: 77 amalgam-associated lesions were found and could be subdivided into five pre-defined interface stomatitis types. We found 22 lesions associated with PFM and 20 showed histopathologic features similar to those associated with amalgam. Hg accumulations were detected in the majority of amalgam-associated but only in part of the PFM-associated lesions.
CONCLUSIONS: Amalgam-associated lichenoid lesions present a wide spectrum of histopathologic patterns, corresponding to similar patterns in dermatopathology but with no evidence of association with specific disease. PFM-associated lesions tend to display similar lichenoid features, suggestive of common pathogenetic mechanisms. Hg accumulations may play a role to maintain the chronicity of such oral lichenoid lesions.  相似文献

A study on the current oscillation based on the electrogenerated superoxide ion (O2-) at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) in dimethylsulfoxide solution containing tetra-n-alkylammonium perchlorate as the electrolyte was carried out. Cyclic voltammetric, potential step chronoamperometric, normal and reverse pulse voltammetric techniques were employed in this study. A bare glassy carbon electrode, a liquid hemispherical mercury (Hg) drop-coated gold (Au) electrode and a Hg film-coated Au electrode were also used as working electrodes to understand the mechanism of the current oscillation. The experimental conditions were optimized for a simple, regular and reproducible current oscillation. The specific adsorption phenomenon of iodide ion and the adsorption of the alkyl chain of the supporting electrolyte on the HMDE surface were also considered to clarify the experimental factors governing the current oscillation phenomenon. It has been concluded that the oscillation is mainly due to the promoted oxidation (dissolution) of the HMDE itself by the adsorption of O2-, resulting in the formation–destruction of a passive film such as Hg2(O2-)2 on the electrode surface. A probable mechanism for the observed current oscillation is discussed.  相似文献
